A title can ruin a film because it is usually the first thing you know about it. If someone said to me that I should watch this great film called Boss Level I would honestly probably pass on it. I almost did and I’ve learnt my lesson, Boss Level is a bad name and it isn’t the most perfect film in the world but it is action-packed fun.
Boss Level, directed by Joe Carnahan, is about Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) a retired special forces officer who is trapped in a time-loop. Every day is the day he dies as he fights against assassins and he has no idea why they’re killing him. All he knows is that he has been far away from his estranged son and the love of his life, a scientist played by Noami Watts.
Yes, you feel like you’re in some sort of loop too. Another time-loop film, they’re coming out of everywhere now but Boss Level is a step above the rest. Does the science behind the film work? I’m no scientist but I’m going to say that’s an easy no but who cares when you’re in it for the action. Boss Level is like the action films you’d rent from Blockbuster, you’re watching it to have fun not solve the meaning of life itself.
The film doesn’t fully dive into as much gaming as the title might insist it is going to. The idea is simply that each day is his final boss fight but I would describe it as Groundhog Day meets Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
It even has a score and soundtrack which feels like the additional tracks on a really good film soundtrack. Like the B-sides of a Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. It’s these small aspects which makes a film enjoyable, brings it down to earth when it’s being outrageous. That perfect mixture of realism and extravagant is what makes an entertaining action film.
The cast is well put together and with enough over the top acting to elevate the fun and ridiculousness of the situation. Frank Grillo holds his own and shows he can easily hold his own as a leading man. Mel Gibson plays a worthy rival, although, would be better if he had more action on screen time. Noami Watts shows the importance of casting a high-quality actress in small roles as she turns her small role into a strong and determined character.
Boss Level isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea but every now and again you need an action film to desensitise you from Oscar-worthy films. Boss Level is that film, the film is definitely one of my favourite of the year so far so showing its true colours and just being what it is and not trying to be more than it should be.
If you’re looking for an action film for a fun night in, something you can laugh with and make jokes with then Boss Level is for you. Frank Grillo shines in this turbulent and perfectly executed action sci-fi which all action film fans should watch.
