My expectations for pretty much all DC content is quite low, except for The Batman. When sitting down on an early Saturday morning for my screening of DC League of Super-Pets I was hoping that the movie would brightly start my day. I can safely say that it is better then it should probably be.
You’re probably thinking, Super-Pets movie…have we not had enough superhero films already? No! Especially if the future is more Super-Pets movies. I’m actually amazed at how much of a super fun time I had watching the film. The film follows Superman’s dog Krypto (voiced by The Rock) who has to find a way to save his owner from a surprising pet villain as every member of the justice league has been captured. After his powers are affected he must team up with a group of homeless pets who have each gained powers of their own.
I didn’t know the villain going into the film and that made it better for me, lets just say Kate McKinnon does a great job at creating a perfect mix of evil, comedy and ridiculousness. The animation of Super-Pets is nothing to really write home about, it isn’t cinema changing like Into the Spider-Verse or The Lego Movie’s but it does the job.
Where DC League of Super-Pets really catches you is by relating to every animal lover and owner watching. No matter what animal you love or own you will relate to the comedy of the film. The writing is a great mix to the point where I didn’t want to see the normal Justice League and simply wanted just the entire run time to be the Super-Pets. Mix that feeling with a great soundtrack, a surprisingly original story and you’ve got yourself one hell of an animal animated film.
DC League of Super-Pets is one of the best family movies this year, is it another super hero film? Yes, but its one that the entire family can enjoy, pets included.
