Showing Signs of Hilarity
It’s safe to say that the main science fiction comedy, whether that be animated or live action, at the moment in the world is Rick and Morty. The show has somehow managed to gain an insane amount of popularity that no one could’ve ever predicted. I remember watching the show when it was brand new and it didn’t have the huge following and then sometime between season two and three the following of the show took off like a rocket. The long break in between seasons gave Rick and Morty the chance to be found and be popular. Now in this current long break between seasons, a show has been released that many of the Rick and Morty fans might look towards for comfort. That show is Final Space.
Final Space follows the story of an astronaut named Gary Space who is imprisoned on a spaceship with an annoying computer prison guard/operator of the ship, an annoying therapist robot and a bunch of almost broken down security droids. One day while repairing a satellite he runs into a cute yet planet destroying sidekick who looks somewhat like a green olive with a cute face named Mooncake. The show is serialised, much like Rick and Morty, and follows their dangerous adventures throughout the universe whilst being chased down by an evil overlord who wants Mooncake.
It obviously isn’t the same as Rick and Morty but it is impossible to not compare the two shows when explaining how much I enjoyed the first episode. In the first episode, you’re introduced to Gary who is basically a jerk who thinks he is a hot shot guy and is under the false impression that he is captain of the ship when he is actually a prisoner. This makes for a funny banter between him and the robots, for example, the main ship will add an extra day to his sentence for every time he tries to eat a cookie which is something I should have in my daily life.
Where the show really takes off is actually the show’s level of emotion which is helped by a surprisingly good score. In Rick and Morty the score is usually some sort of a joke and there are emotional moments but the show is usually just trying to make the most out of what emotions you do have for the show at the time. Final Space, so far, has done a great deal of work in creating its main character and showing the relationship between him and his planet-destroying sidekick, they could be an iconic duo in the future. The animation design is perfectly fitting for what the show is and has a pretty high production quality to it but what doesn’t these days.
In terms of voice acting there are a few great people attached to it like Fred Armisen, Steven Yeun, and David Tennant, Gary is played by the show creator Olan Rogers who I didn’t know anything about before this show so I apologize for not knowing that. Gary sounds like and acts like he should be voiced by Nathan Fillion as he has that strong and courageous yet stupid and afraid all the time attitude to him, he seems a little bit close to Nathan Fillion’s Firefly character Malcolm Reynolds but that’s just me hearing another voice when watching something because in the end Olan Rogers holds up his character whilst also making the show and thats never an easy thing to do.
The first episode of Final Space is a very impressive one and it’ll be interesting to see if they can keep going at the good pace they’ve set up for themselves, hopefully, the show doesn’t just have a great pilot and then dip down from there. The future story is teased a little and I’ll be tuning in to see how it goes but as of right now Rick and Morty fans should definitely check it out because it might just be the show that gets you by until the next season of Rick and Morty actually comes out.
