I love film scores! When reviewing a film if I think the film score isn’t good enough than you’re already in trouble. Basically all my favourite films have fantastic film scores that I listen to frequently throughout the year. Why am I rambling on about this? Well I thought I’d give film scores a new appreciation in the form of a new segment here called First Listen where I present to you a track from the score of a film that isn’t out yet because, apart from being crucial to the film, a film score can give you a feel for what the film is going to be like. So I hope you enjoy this segment and thanks for reading.
Our first ‘First Listen’ is Spider-Man Homecoming by Michael Giacchino and I’ll start off by saying I’m biased as I already love Giacchino’s work, yes even his Cars 2 score is great I mean talk about a score bringing some excitement into a boring film. The Spider-Man scores have never been amazing, Amazing Spider-Man 2 was quite average indeed, so there isn’t too much to go up against except that everyone wants their version of Spider-Man. Everyone wants the kid web crawler with the cool Spider-Man theme song playing as they sing the words but unfortunately, you can’t have everything in life. What Giacchino has done though is create a piece, the track released so far is the suite for the film, that gives off a clear fun and fast web crawling time mixed in with a few dark emotions. It sounds very much like a Marvel score and that’s a good thing because the usual dark and almost sad Spider-Man scores have been boring over the years. If Marvel has shown us anything over its many years of success it’s that you can have a bit of fun while in the worst of times, just only when appropriate, and that’s the kind of ideas behind Spider-Man. He isn’t being dark and brooding like Batman hes just a kid whos gone through some hard times and is trying to make the world a better place by being your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and this suite really captures that tone. Can’t wait to hear what Giacchino has next for us!
