Beaches. Babes. Bonkers.
Every now and again there is a crazy story that comes out in the world that seems almost unbelievable. It’s these stories that get turned into amazing documentaries which try to explain what on Earth happened. I love these stories. They might be stories of success or stories of failure. They might be stories about death or life. The story of Fyre festival is a story about success, failure and the life and death of a festival. It has to be seen to be believed.
If you don’t know what Fyre Festival is, or was, then I highly recommend that you actually stop reading this review right now as the documentary will be more alarming if you go in knowing nothing. I will say that the documentary is one of the best I’ve seen in awhile so yes you should see it.
Alright, still here? Cool, so Fyre Festival was an idea by rapper Ja Rule and Entrepreneur Billy McFarland. Essentially the idea was to host one big festival on an island in the Bahamas where festival goers could live in paradise for two weeks and get to party with celebrities from around the world. It was meant to be a huge launch event for their site Fyre which was a talent booking site. Say you wanted Ja Rule to perform at your party, because you’re cool like that, you could book him. What ended up happening was one of the most controversial happenings in the space of festivals.
The long story short goes that Billy McFarland failed on his promise and the event turned into
While you have footage of Billy McFarland planning and seeming like the coolest and smartest guy ever, you also have many of his
Fyre Festival is easily a great example of how not to make and host a festival. It tells the story of why things need to be planned out and why you can’t just do things on a whim. It also tells you the story of this young man who had a lot going for him and he either fails or always knew he was going to fail.
Fyre is an interesting watch and a great addition to Netflix’s library. It’s refreshing to watch something that isn’t the same kind of TV show. It’s a perfect fit for the platform as it is a must watch for millennials who could be easily tricked into events like Fyre. It tells the story of how influencers work and how the world needs to adapt our understanding of the new form of advertising that is a simple Instagram post.
If you’re looking for a great documentary to watch then look no further than Fyre. It’s an hour and a half of your day well spent and even if you know the story already it has some great additional insight you might not know about. If that isn’t enough for you then there are some great shots of the Bahamas that’ll make you want to go on holidays, just make sure you know what you’re booking first.
