More of the Same

Guardians of the Galaxy is hot property right now as everything and anything that involves it is going to be popular. With Marvel and Disney now making sure good games are being made of their IPs we now have a Telltale series for Guardians of the Galaxy and from both parties, Telltale and Marvel/Disney, it’s pretty much more of the same.
The game takes place in a seperate universe to the films, so there is no confusion, and follows the guardians team as they’ve tracked down the mad titan Thanos. The story starts off as a simple one but involves into something much more intruiging throughout the first episode. It is not simply about stopping Thanos but instead about the relic Thanos is after and the ability it has. From the first episode you can tell that the series is going to go through Peter Quill’s back story quite a bit and that your choices will affect how that story plays out, or at least your way too the final story changes as you make key decisions.
To be able to have your own story experience with Guardians of the Galaxy is quite cool because the characters are so unique and they each have their own crazy backstory. This is the benefit of it being a Telltale game. Unfortunately this is the same Telltale that has had the same gameplay and almost the same graphics throughout all of its games, and it looks dated. I get that the game isn’t going to be some form of technological marvel, it is released on mobile devices as well, but surely a game with this huge of an IP is where you show off a new kind of Telltale game.
The soundtrack is awesome, as any Guardians soundtrack should be, but the graphics and play out of the game is quite stop start, doesn’t match the fast beat awesome soundtrack. At times while I was playing the game would stop completely for a few seconds while it thought about what it was doing. This doesn’t match up with the fact the game isn’t just made for a PS4 but also for phones so why it has much loading time on a PS4 at all is beyond me.
One thing I’d love for Telltale games to increase is difficulty. I know that the games are played for the story experiences and that everyone should be able to choose the decision they like but more difficult decisions should be challenging to do and big fight shouldn’t be as easy as talking to someone in a game boy game.
