I’m thinking he’s back
John Wick 3 stars Keanu Reeves from great movies such as John Wick 1 and another you may have seen; John Wick 2. Well, this time he’s back and donning the bulletproof suit once more to show us intense action, full on violence and an interesting world. I would normally pose the question “is it any good” but because its John Wick and it’s going to be great no matter what, right? I feel the big question is; as a third in a movie, does it bring anything new? Or keep the movie series fresh?
The answer is an astounding, Hell yes it does. I’m going to call a spade a spade here and start by saying that these movies aren’t going to win any Oscars but the reason why I feel these movies do so well, is because they never try to be anything that they aren’t. Although, there should be some form of Oscar award for stunts and action films, it’s cinema too! If you haven’t seen any John Wicks before, do yourself a favour and go see them, but only if you’re in the mood for insane action, precise gunplay and a fun world that encompasses it all. If that isn’t your thing, the movies have a semi-loose plot around Keanu Reeves character, being the best there ever was and after losing his wife (AND DOG!) he goes on a revenge-filled rampage and its great. In the second, it’s a little more of the same but his new dog lives (YAY!). The third one though takes place just after the second one ends and tells the story of reactions and consequences.
I’ll focus on two of my favourite things in these movies because that’s all I really think is needed to express why you should see this film. The first; is the world that this is set in. Its modern day, but there is an underground assassin’s guild that has its own rules. I know rules aren’t the most exciting but they play a huge part in the narrative and I honestly feel like its fresh, interesting and just ambiguous enough for you to want to know more. That means I’m fully engaged and am constantly wanting to know how things work, the other locations of hotels, where everyone from these worlds are based, and the history that goes along with it all.
The film’s are written to be based around these rules and they have to comply with them to continue the story. It is the action film equivalent of writing yourself into a corner except in this case you have John Wick using extreme violence to find you a way out. Film’s break their own rules all the time, TV shows as well, and its refreshing to see a series keeping to it’s rules.
The second is the action, obviously. But not just the action, but the training, the choreography and just the insane set ups that they manage to put on screen. Every movie they seem to up the action levels and I love it more and more. When it comes to action, this movie has it in spades. I don’t want to spoil any great set pieces, but the trailers have some footage, and believe me they live up to the hype. Even tonight, at the screening, there was a scene at the very start with a very tall man, and that had everyone gasping, snickering and audibly cheering. If that does sell it, I don’t know what will…perhaps a chase between a horse and motorcycle? This film has action you can’t even think of!
Everyone acted pretty great, Lawrence Fishburne might have chewed the scenery a little too much but that would be my biggest complain (it could also be how they wanted his character, so who knows). But overall, I loved every second. When it was high octane, it was great. When I was learning more about the world, I was engaged and loving it. This movie is what action films should be and I’m glad it got made, and I got to see it. All that’s left, is for you to go as well.
