More of the royal family and stories that may or may not be true are being told in series and films. Take everything with a grain of salt because the endless royal family content is all stories told by those who weren’t there. All we can do as a viewer is watch what might have been, watch how people might have interacted and continue to realise the struggles of those now passed. With each film, series and documentary Princess Diana becomes more and more of an emblem of how we treat ‘celebrities’. We invade their personal lives, living through them instead of caring about ourselves. Spencer is yet another example of how one person can have so much attention yet no actual help.
Spencer is set across one Christmas with the royal family at Sandringham estate in England. The whole film purely follows Princess Diana as she struggles to fit into the family and fit into this world that has been created around her by the Royal Family and the rest of society.
Spencer is directed by Pablo Larrain and if you’ve seen his previous film Jackie then you know what you’re in for with Spencer. Diana is played by Kristen Stewart who excels as Diana and is currently my favourite actress to play the Princess. I could easily listen to Stewart swear in her Diana voice all day and still be entertained. Stewart does a fantastic job in such an important role, you can see Diana’s feelings in the way she moves, the way she stares and how she speaks.
Similar to the film Jackie, a large majority of the film is just Diana with the rest of the Royal Family only getting a few lines. There is a lot more of William and Harry in the film than the rest of the family. Diana’s relationship with them in the film is sweet and caring and represents how separate they can be from the rest of the family. Spencer does a great job at portraying how Diana is a breath of social normality that the Royal Family don’t seem to want to let into their old mansions.
Spencer is easily the shining example of Princess Diana, yes The Crown is one of the greatest series of all time but Kristen Stewart as Diana is the definitive portrayal. Spencer is a must-see beautiful film that isn’t just emotionally striking but visually as well. With a look different to every other biopics and the emotion to match it, Spencer is one of the greatest biopics to be on the screen.
