One of my favourite films of all time is the great Pixar film Wall-e. It is the story of a boy droid (Wall-e) who is alone by himself until he meets a beautiful girl droid (Eve) who he falls in love with instantly and proceeds to try and win her over whilst also saving a ship full of people. This is also, weirdly, the plot to Passengers. I love Wall-e and therefore I should love Passengers but I think Passengers is alright at it’s best. It has charisma and it’s funny at times but overall it turns out to be a bit long and generic. In a time of some great sci-fi films it finds itself towards the bottom of my list. The film had everything it needed and there is one main plot surprise that I didn’t expect because it was different to the trailers. The only thing that was really missing was a reason for me to care about Jim and Aurora (Wall-e and Eve) really badly apart from just thinking about how unlucky they were to wake up so early. You will leave the cinema thinking of a few silly things that’ll make you go “but why???”. Overlooking that though overall the film is two hours of time well spent with an enjoyable sci-fi film that might not be your favourite ever but one of your most enjoyable. Oh and the score is by Thomas Newman who also did the score for Wall-e so even if you don’t find the film enjoyable rest easily knowing you get to spend two hours listening to a really good alternative version of the Wall-e score.
Expectation Level: Moderate
Expectations almost achieved, wasn’t expecting too much of the film.
Score: 3/5 – A good cast mixed with a great score and a beautiful picture makes this film more enjoyable then it probably should be. It’s fun and enjoyable but just not too innovative.
