Excuse the pun but as expected this film is filled with stabbings, and I mean filled. Get you bingo card out and fill in different ways of getting stabbed and have fun with your friends because Scream VI has your slasher film itch taken care of.
Following on from Scream V, the main gang have now moved to New York for less crime apparently and a safer city to live in? The gang, Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Chad (Mason Gooding) and their new friends are now living their college lives until the Ghostface killer comes back to haunt their lives. The gang must decide to leave town or hunt the killer before Ghostface gets them.
It is quite surprising that the Scream franchise has lasted this long but at the same time it always does what it’s best at well, that being a slasher film. It’s ability to stand on its own whilst also making fun of every film around it allows it to be a much more enjoyable experience for all, even though it can distract from the suspense a little.
Scream VI is no exception, whilst it isn’t as well put together as Scream V it is still the same amount of fun and thriller to be had just with a little less solving. V was a new chapter for the franchise which allowed the film to make its weird connected world, whilst VI expands on that as an easy follow up that isn’t essential viewing but is a great dessert to the main course that is Scream V.
New York is a very different setting for the franchise and whilst it is used well in some parts it would’ve been nice to get the full New York experience. There is a great sequence on the Subway but I would’ve liked to see panic in Times Square or hiding from potential weirdos in Central Park, perhaps a little more about moving to a city to get away from crime only to be in a city filled with weird crime.
I do feel like in this Scream the victims fight back a lot more, however, Ghostface seems to be quite in destructible in the face area. I’m just saying if I got hit in the face with a vase or a giant pot or a brick then I would be out cold but Ghostface is one determined person who is meeting their match with some victims who have some fight. It is all good to see because it makes the chase sequences more longer and exciting then just hello, stab and you’re dead.
If you’re looking for your slasher itch to be scratched then Scream VI is for you. It has great action/chase sequences, a cast of strong actors who all play getting stabbed really well and there is enough slashing to satisfy your weird needs. It is a certainly a knife time to be had for all…if you can handle watching brutal stabbing.
Score: 4/5 Stabs
