Say my name, say my name
Oh boy! It’s finally here! You’ve all been asking for it and they delivered! A fun, happy go lucky superhero film from DC comics. I was going to follow my usual structure and tease if I think this movie is good or not, but I enjoyed it so much, I really just want to tell you why it’s good and why you should go see it. So that’s exactly what I’m going to do!
The story of Shazam is an interesting one but one thats been used in someway or another for a while. A young boy can magically become a older man and hilarity usually ensues. This time with superhero powers, and no Tom Hanks. Anyways, magic exisits and Billy Batson (the main character) is now tasked with protecting it as the world champion, all the while dealing with being an orhpan and foster family issues. Its a simple story, but its safe enough and famimilar enough to be enjoyable and the changes they make to steotypes was refreshing.
The main reason I loved this film, aside from the action and script (that i’ll get to) is the feel of adventures and fun I get from this film. It harkens back to the feeling of
The action and script were on point. Everyone was committed and I bought everything, they were all a delight to watch. I had a fear that the jokes would be one note, or get stale over time but they never seemed to be beating a dead horse at all. The director for this film has some history with horror and it seems like some of his previous skills were put in this. There wasnt a heap of it but its the only thing that I would have a second guess when recommending it to younger children, maybe 9 and below (it has a M rating in Australia).
I could go on about the CGI being good, the feels being real and the action and humour being mixed cleverly but I really just want you to go see it. If you like superheroes, it’s self-aware and has great action. If you have kids, it has enough action but also some nice morals and good kid moments. If you love Shazam, you’ll adore everything it sets out to do. Overall I think this movie was a triumph and I really hope that it pioneers some more movies like itself for DC. Oh, and of course, a sequel… I need that sequel. Please go, as soon as you can if you want a fun adventure, I know I will be going again.
