Shifty Lorca Business
Congratulations to Star Trek: Discovery on getting renewed for a second season! I’m really glad that it has, was worried that it was doing well but not being viewed well, but CBS says everything is going great so that’s good to me. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for Starfleet as they face some tough times ahead after the events of this week’s episode.
This week’s episode, Lethe, sees Michael going through a tough time as Sarek is almost assassinated and she feels the pain he does due to their mind melding. We also see Captain Lorca revealing his true relationship with the admiral which only ends badly as he ends up pulling a gun on her in bed, not the best move by him. The new crewman Ash Tyler gets his first mission to help Michael find Sarek but he still seems a bit suspicious as turmoil starts to build up in the universe.
There was one big name drop in this episode and that was Sarek’s choice between sending Michael or Spock on the expedition for the Vulcan Science Academy. Sarek also mentions that Spock joined Starfleet which is interesting as it further gives us a placing of Discovery. It’s not the only other Star Trek series mention as the Enterprise is mentioned as Michael tells Tilly that she could end up on a great ship like the Enterprise. Could we end up with some Discovery and Enterprise fighting side by side action at the end of the season, it would be quite a surprise if it were to happen and I sure hope it does.
The episode wasn’t as fast paced or as urgent, despite an important character almost dying throughout the whole episode, yet it still felt fresh and Discovery still has that new feeling too it. I’m hoping next week’s episode is more urgent but Lethe’s revelations in character development, mainly for Lorca, was very intriguing as Captian Lorca is slowly taking command of Starfleet despite the admiral not being to approving of his methods or his mental state. Captain Lorca ends up sending the admiral to talk to the Klingons but she ends up being captured and it’s obvious that Lorca set her up but its hard to tell if its part of his plan or just a simple set up to get her out of the way to keep his ship.
Captain Lorca remains to be the coolest and most interesting character on the Discovery so far and with a lack of Klingons its good to have an almost villainous character on the Discovery to make up for the lack of enemies showing up. I’m hoping that now that the admiral has been captured the show turns into a rescue mission with Starfleet being on the assault against the Klingons and the show going at full speed into its midseason finale.
