Sitting in a cinema where everyone in the audience was a girl and around the age or below the age of seventeen I felt out of place. I took a second to wonder if maybe these types of films, the Perks of Being a Wallflower, Breakfast Club and Easy A type films were not in my age range anymore now that I’m 22. This was a thought I had through out the film as other members of the audience were laughing at scenes that I didn’t get or didn’t relate too. That isn’t bad in this case though because The Edge of Seventeen is clearly pointed towards a very particular demographic. The film is good and it is entertaining and fun at it’s best but unlike films like the ones I mentioned previously it won’t hit everyone the same way. You shouldn’t go in expecting it to be the next film you watch whenever you’re down but need a pick me up aswell. The soundtrack is really good and the cinematography is even better but ultimately it isn’t a film I would watch again. That is just me though, the chances of you liking it are higher depending on who you are and the type of experiences you’ve had in life. The film is about dealing with the different things life can throw at you at once and how that time in your life can be difficult but your enjoyment depends on the type of experiences you’ve had. If you relate to the events then it will most likely be a very good film for you but if not then it’ll just be good. Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson are both really good in the film and your ticket price is justified in just seeing them act together on screen, it’s obvious as to why everyone is raving about Steinfeld’s acting. Overall its a good film and even better if well you’re at the edge of seventeen.
Expectation Level: Medium, High expectations of Steinfeld’s acting
Expectations achieved and the acting is really good.
Score: 3.5/5 – The film is sweet, a little sad, funny and good looking. It’s not a film I would watch again but the appeal is certainly there and it definitely has the quality to be popular for a few years.
