Oh Dear Archikins
(Spoilers for this episode)
Oh, dear let’s just get it out of the way now so we can move on from it all, yes the whole The Red Circle thing is stupid. There are particular parts of comic books that don’t make it into films and TV shows, simply because it would be stupid. These are the parts that comic book fans get mad at and ask why they aren’t there, for example why the Green Arrow doesn’t have facial hair in Arrow which is because someone smart said it would be stupid. The Red Circle is a nod to the comic world of Archie Comics, the superhero team in Archie comics is called The Mighty Crusaders who were made around the time of The Avengers and Justice League…clearly ended up in third place. The new vigilante The Black Hood is also from Archie Comics and well I was thinking the other day about how I have started to get superhero exhaustion, despite loving every second since Batman Begins and Iron Man came out, and now that exhaustion extends to this ridiculously stupid development in Riverdale.
This episode, The Watcher in the Woods, starts off with Jughead going back to his other school, which I forgot he was at, to be honest, and has Archie meeting Veronica’s father and also Betty’s mum receiving a letter from the killer who has named himself The Black Hood. Jughead is dealing with life at his new school and trying to not fit in but also learn it’s ins and out and Archie meeting Veronica’s father wasn’t really shocking except Hiram Lodge does a great job at embarrassing Archie into making him start his boy band haha. That means that the rest of the season will be Archie’s The Red Circle vs The Black Hood which its safe to say I’m not a fan of.
The last thing The CW needs is another superhero show and the last thing I need/want is another superhero show and I’m hoping that this whole Red Circle thing blows over quickly. We’re only three episodes into a twenty-two episode season and the show is going to fast. I don’t think that this whole superhero gang vs Black Hood drama can last another nineteen episode, in fact I know it can’t. Much like another CW show Arrow, Riverdale appears to be showing its cards too early and I hope it won’t make the show boring or make the story arc one to forget. The first season of Arrow had a villain similar to this where he tried to wipe out all the ‘bad guys’ as in drug dealers and what not, basically be the same but opposite of the Green Arrow and it got to be pretty obvious who it was. The difference between that season and this season of Riverdale is that the villain in Arrow didn’t show up for a while into the season and you didn’t have a suspect early on but in Riverdale’s case you have the villain laid out in the third episode and everyone already has some suspects. I hope I’m wrong and that this isn’t what the whole season will be because this was a poor episode and I was enjoying the show quite a lot.
