More Mystery, Less Answers, More Awkardness and More like Scream.
Despite my slowly building up hate for the story and the way Riverdale is presented to us I do however think that sometimes it just blasts through problems. Over the last few episodes we’ve gotten Archie’s whole Red Circle group up and running to gone, never to be seen again, and now after the Black Hood called Betty at the end we have those phone calls all sorted and out of the way in a fast manner, something that other shows would focus a lot of episodes on. I just wish that they would stop with random moments that don’t match the rest of the scene.
This week’s episode follows on from last week’s awful episode where Betty has been called by the Black Hood. The Black Hood is demanding that she follows his instructions or else he’ll carve her sister up like a jack-o lantern….taking it pretty far. Betty has to do all of his instructions and tell no one and her instructions are basically ripping apart her life. Amongst all of this Betty mayhem, Veronica is trying to impress an old friend whose parents will provide capital for her father’s building job. Also happening is Jughead is becoming a serpent, something I thought had already happened at the end of all of his initiation he receives a serpent jacket that he already had? His father was the leader of the Serpents and from my memory, I remember Jughead took up that mantle, at least slightly, when he received the jacket the first time. The Jughead part of Riverdale is being thrown all over the place just so that it fits in with whats happening on the other side of town, which is ironically a similar argument as the conflict that’s happening in the show between the Northsiders and the Southsiders.
The episode isn’t perfect but it is better than the previous two weeks which had Archie being all Batman in Riverdale which was boring and way too over the top. It’s something that I’m glad they got over with quickly and moved on, even mentioning it to people had them saying it was a bad idea. This week was a little more intriguing and once again more like the TV show version of Scream except Betty is now the main character and she is trying to find the man in the hood instead of the man in the mask. This is amplified when Betty goes to a dark abandoned house that the Black Hood tells her to go to. I’m not saying that the TV show version of Scream came up with this all first, that would be ridiculous, I’m simply stating that it was pretty recent and Riverdale is becoming more like it instead of being it’s own thing like it was in Season one, Riverdale isn’t being new and creative enough.
Riverdale is still being interested and the killer isn’t being revealed anytime soon, in fact I hope he isn’t so that the small amount of suspense continues on. There are still really weird moments like Betty’s mum arriving at the event to a Thunder by Imagine Dragons that was just simply an awful piece of editing and decision making, not everything needs a song to it and especially not for fifthteen seconds. It is getting pretty clear that the Black Hood is two people and not just one, I would be very surprised if it wasn’t two people, so lets hope that the next episode really dives into the search for the Black Hood and doesn’t mess around with useless moments like this episode unfortunately did.
