Strange Reflections
First thing you’ll need to do, is something that I’ve been struggling with since I left the movies. You need to forget or dissociate Get Out from Us. Sure, they’re directed, produced and written by the same man, but they are not the same movie. In fact, I would go far as to say they are completely different, all while being a similar genre. If you haven’t seen Get Out, you should defientley go watch it. But if you have, the big question is; does Us have the same wow factor its “predecessor” did?
I want to start off by saying this movie has layers. Whatever I say, I don’t think ill be able to do it justice. Sure, its good, but the more I think about it, the more stuff begins to unfold. There is a greater mystery with this film, and it continues way after the credits end. The movie revolves around a family, that go to a holiday home and come face to face with weird, perhaps evil alternate versions of themselves. That in itself is creepy, and the trailer does well to show you the unsettling nature of the story but only as you watch the movie itself does the narrative begin to show how insane it is. There is so much more, but there is not much more I can say. The biggest thing I took away from the movie, aside from the continual theorising and conversations that it encourages, is the acting. Everybody is so incredibly committed that I bought everything. The alternate versions were creepy, scary and unsettling, the main cast of “standard” family members were honest and believable. Lupita Nyong’o especially was amazing the whole time on screen and if you don’t know already she’s a great actress, you will after watching this movie.
The music is the perfect balance between unsettling and comforting at all the right times and the way its shot is so purposeful, that I loved every second. I can see people having mixed feelings with this movie, and ill be honest; there are some parts I would’ve like more clarification on, or at least more detail. But I know that Jordan Peele did everything he did, on purpose, so what it was and what I want to see more of a two totally different things and knowing that, I think it helps me enjoy the movie in a different way.
Horror is an interesting genre. I think
