A Daredevil in the Jungle is Worth Two in the Hand
Charles Soule is one of the main reasons why I still love comics. He can somehow make something classic and almost ritualistic feel contemporary and exciting every time he writes.
If you know me, then you know that I love the comic and character Swamp Thing. From Alan Moore’s reinvention of Len Weins (RIP) pulp horror creation to Scott Snyder and Charles Soule’s run, I have loved every page. So! This may seem biased but even when you take a look at Soules’ other comics, such as; Red Lantern, Superman, and Wonder Woman or his brief foray into the Marvel Star Wars universe with Lando, you can see that he is talented and is well regarded when it comes to handling impressive characters and IP’s.
This current run of Daredevil is no exception. The almost formulaic approach to classic comic writing brightens the mood of an easily tempting dark character and makes what’s old feel new again. He approaches a simple missing person story line with a fun character to jet set you to a new environment, throws in ninjas and a vintage villain twist at the end to get you hooked and, you know what, it worked a treat.
Ron Garney handles the art this issue and my word, it is pretty. This is where I feel the nostalgia coupled with the writing comes in, in some panels you can see a very obvious (and very beautiful) homage to Frank Miller with pure daredevil poses and even a varied mirroring art style. As I’m not intimately familiar with Garney’s work, as much as I am with other artists/writers, I can only assume this grade A work will continue and I hope for the comics sake that it does, because if this team can keep it up, this comic will be nothing but a delight to absorb through all my senses every month.
