Manners Maketh Spinoff Comic
This week I tentatively opened this comic as I am a firm believer that comic spin offs from either cult graphic novels or movie tie-in comics are usually rushed shoehorned comics made for some quick cash and unfortunately it seems I was right to be hesitant. Its not that I wanted to be right, I loved the film and Mark Millar can be an amazing writer when he isn’t trying too hard to be edgy, but this comic is not a Matthew Vaughn film and it is certainly not a Mark Millar comic.
The first hurdle I had to leap over in relation to getting through this comic, was the average art. Image comics are known for getting some of the best creative minds in the industry and pushing them together and releasing gold, but problem one came hard and fast. From the first panel to the last I was underwhelmed and only pushed through as I hoped there would be a cliff-hanger worth persevering. I may seem dramatic but when it comes to a tie-in for a heavily anticipated movie, I expected a little more than what Simon Fraser seems to be capable of doing.
As for the writing, it seemed forced and unnatural which is strange as Rob Williams is apparently English just like me. But as it seems to be geared towards perhaps an American audience the colloquialisms and “English culture” are shoved not so eloquently down our necks and not very well at that. Apart from that minor gripe, I found the story very hard to read as I was never given a reason to be engaged until perhaps the last two pages and by then I was so unimpressed by the comic as a whole, I found myself not very excited for the next issue.
It’ll be a month until I read the next issue and with any luck maybe the sour taste of this comic will have been washed away by the sweet refreshing taste of the new movie The Kingsman: The Golden Circle (See Jamie’s review the 21st of September). Here’s hoping The Red Diamond stops being so rough by the next issue.
Score: 1/5
