More of the Same Rooster Teeth Antics
As YouTube continues it’s surge into mainstream TV, and by that I mean it is slowly becoming it’s own network where creators are going to YouTube to create content instead of the regular places, it is clear that YouTube wants to fill their product, YouTube Red, with content fans will love. They don’t want to fill it with content for people who aren’t in that YouTube crowd at the moment because they are clearly making a slow word of mouth campaign, have enough people on the service because of the content they already like and your stats are better. Lazer Team 2 fits into that content but it also fits in a little too well.
Lazer Team 2 is the sequel to 2015’s Lazer Team, duh, a film made by Rooster Teeth who are one of the biggest creators on YouTube having their own channel whilst also having multiple other channels working alongside with them. The film continues on from the first film as the Lazer Team, a group of four losers who each have one piece of one armour suit, find themselves going through space to find their lost friend Woody before it is too late.
As a fan of the first film, I thought it was surprisingly good and had a higher level of quality than I thought it was going to have, I left Lazer Team 2 with the same feeling I had for the first one. The film isn’t fantastic but for what it is it’s a good film. It proves that YouTube can make film that are of a high quality for it’s service but also that the content maker Rooster Teeth has a level of class in not just hashing out a second one for their fans. If you’re Rooster Teeth fan then you’ll be pleased to know that it is more of the same and has some pretty good new cameos for people who weren’t in the first film.
The only issue I really have for Lazer Team 2 is that it’s purely for fans. I’m a fan of some of Rooster Teeth’s content and some of the jokes and cameos flew by me so it is definitely a film that would be enjoyed better by someone who knows the content really well. It’s the same for comic book movies where if you’re a fan of a superhero than you’re most likely going to like the film more than someone who is just watching the movie for fun. Lazer Team 2 doesn’t expand on the series to include new fans but instead hones in on it’s current audience to make a film for them and there is nothing wrong with that it just would’ve been good/cool to get more fans onboard and involved.
In the end if you liked the first Lazer Team film then you’re most likely going to like Lazer Team 2. It features it’s same funny and surprinsgly good cast as well as a bonkers story that you get to use your imagination with. The jokes are pretty similar from the first film and some are a little more hit and miss but its still a fun adventure to be had. It’ll be interesting to see what they do for Lazer Team 3, here’s hoping they can make a film that will have a slightly different adventure for everyone.
