Home run
Spider-Man and sequels have sometimes been a messy business. The general consensus on favourite spider-man movies is the Tobey McGuire Spider-man 2 at the top but everyone’s most hated is Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-man 2. So, the big question on everybody’s lips is; will this be a Tobey or a Garfield?
It’s a Tom Holland, its spectacular and I love it 3000.
The story for this movie has been pretty under wraps as it is the last movie in Marvel’s phase 3 (infinity Saga) and for other reasons that I definitely cannot get into. What I will say about the plot is this; Spider-Man is still Spider-Man and is now dealing with the loss of his mentor (which I feel Marvel used cleverly as a new Uncle Ben) and an upcoming European field trip. It’s plain and simple but is then thrown into chaos when Mysterio (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) and Nick Fury are put into the mix. It’s a fun romp around Venice, Prague and London with some great character development and snappy Marvel dialogue. The performances were charming and on par with the last movie, including the bumbling romance with Peter and MJ. Aside from them, I really loved Jake Gyllenhaal’s take on Quinten Beck (Mysterio) and I was pleasantly surprised.
One of the biggest staples of any Spider-Man film is the choreography and action that’ll blow your mind. This movie delivered in spades. At one point I realised my hand was to my mouth as I was shocked and happy at what I was seeing. If you’ve ever played the Spider-Man PS4 video game, then you may know a little of what I’m talking about. This is all amplified by Holland doing a lot of his own stunts and action which knowing that can make the action more special. Aside from Spider-Man, the other action set pieces were also fantastic, and the CGI was, as always, top tier and I loved every second.
The biggest issue I had with the movie, isn’t really an issue at all. Again, my obnoxious comic loving gets in the way in adoring these movies. It’s not to say I didn’t love this movie, because I did. It’s more the fact that I felt like I knew what was going to happen and I was waiting for it the whole time. Saying that there were clever spins that made it fresh, but it still didn’t stop me from waiting for things to happen the entire way. I guess my point is that if you’re a completely non-comic reader, and just a movie viewer, it will surprise you and blow you away. If you love comics, it won’t be as surprising but you’ll still love it either way.
My only reservation is nothing to do with the movie but the course of the Marvel Universe but I’m sure those guys at Disney know exactly what they’re doing. Far From Home is a fantastic sequel in every sense of the word. It built on a world that was fully realised and developed in the first movie while giving us the perfect amount new of questions and answers. Its one of my favourite Marvel films and I feel like it will be yours too. As always go for the Spidey action and stay for the after credits scene.
