Kimmy is going on an adventure that you choose!
My only call to fame is that I was cut out of a crowd shot in the season two finale of Kimmy Schmidt. At that time I would never have guessed the show was going to end with a choose your own adventure…although I was at Universal Studios watching the season finale so I guess anything could happen and that is just the Kimmy way, isn’t it.
Yes, Kimmy’s next adventure is a choose your own adventure, or as Netflix has to say interactive episode. The feature-length episode begins with Kimmy finding an old choose your own adventure book in her backpack which appears to of belonged to an unknown mole woman. A woman Kimmy wasn’t with in the bunker. Kimmy goes on a mission to find out if there is another bunker while her Prince fiance (played by Daniel Radcliffe) has to plan their wedding.
This isn’t Netflix’s first adventure into interactive episodes but their last was their best with Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch. The set up that Kimmy’s adventure would be an interactive episode just suits the show’s style well though. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has always been a weird anything can happen comedy and now that power is in your hands.
The real question is if it is as good as the normal episodes of Kimmy Schmidt and it is but it could also just be a normal episode. While choosing what Kimmy and those around her do is fun and most of the time ends up being funny scenarios, I almost would’ve just loved Kimmy acting it out herself like she has become too inspired by her discovery of a choose your own adventure.
Decisions you make most of the time play out only for them to rewind because you can’t go that way or do that. What would have been an ending for Bandersnatch would instead be you being sent back in rewind to the decision you just made because you can’t go that way. Those decisions can conclude with funny scenarios and little moments with characters that don’t get as much time but you are pushed in a particular direction.
As an episode on its own, this will be a highlight for Kimmy Schmidt fans, and its full-length feature return to the comedy and one that doesn’t feel forced. Filled with great cameos and appearances, a fan of Kimmy Schmidt, 30 Rock and SNL would be pleased watching this interactive episode.
Kimmy’s story with the Reverend is long by this point but being put at the forefront of this episode allows the series to take a look back to the very first season and fans to go on an adventure celebrating their favourite characters. While this interactive episode isn’t something I’d recommend new viewers of Kimmy Schmidt to jump into they certainly will enjoy it certainly is a great addition to an already wonderfully well-made comedy series.
