Saving Your Favourite Kids Show Like It’s Part Of You
Imagine your biggest television obsession. We all have them. We talk about them non stop, waiting each week for the new episode and then a year for the next season. We buy clothes, toys. mugs, games and any other cool merchandise we can. This is what Brigsby Bear Adventures is for James (Kyle Mooney) and when he suddenly has no new episodes he is lost. While those around him are attempting to help guide him into reality, James is fixated on the one thing that remains true to him.
James appears just as trapped in his old home as his new as he tries to get a grip on what has happened to him his whole life. He decides to make a movie to conclude the show and therefore bring closure to his past life. He is not sad for what has happened in the way that his parents are. He doesn’t know any better and he now gets to have all these new experiences with the help of his new friends.
The old school children’s show recorded on VHS, goes along perfectly with the light-hearted nature of the film. Dealing with a serious topic, the film reflects a childish and naive mind. It doesn’t fixate on the “adults” but rather on the younger characters who don’t mock or try to change James in any way. In doing this, the audience is allowed into a child’s mind of creativity and a carelessness for the situation around them.
The cinematography is nicely done including the VHS style recording of the show which adds nostalgia to the film. There is just the right amount of comedy to keep the film lighthearted and upbeat. The writing is truly something unique and a story that inspires perseverance, friendship and a lot of acceptance.
