I used to enjoy thrillers, I feel like in the 90’s there was a new one every week. It was without a doubt the hay day for it. Not to say there aren’t thrillers now, Gone Girl is one that sticks out when I think of this genre, its just that we aren’t over saturated with them now. But does the lack of thrillers help this movie shine or does it fall to the wayside like so many others?
I’m having trouble reviewing this movie, not because I didn’t like it but because I can’t say much that wont spoil the movie. A young girl finds an old ladies’ bag and returns it and craziness kind of spirals out from there. It’s a subtle premise, which I love, and something not so subtle happens in response.
The description sounds like your standard thriller I know, but now that we don’t get as many anymore, it was almost refreshing. The story after that is sometimes dull and sometimes crazy but I can safely say I wasn’t bored while watching the entire thing. I found myself on edge a few times and more of the time feeling uncomfortable for Chloe Grace Moretz’s character Frances.
Everyone’s acting was fine, nothing too amazing and sometimes bordered unbelievable but that is most likely because of the script and maybe not as much the actors faults. It wasn’t that the story is bad, its just the actions that take place, aren’t exactly normal and I prefer my suspense when it feels more realistic and honest. Everything else about this movie was simply alright, and I think that’s what really bothered me about it. I left the movie knowing this movie would be difficult to discuss without spoiling. I don’t want to say its terrible (because quite frankly it’s not) but I also don’t want to say its anything but average and I haven’t seen a movie like this in a long time.
Thrillers aren’t as popular now that TV has become bigger, Greta is an example of a film that maybe should’ve been a short series but it’s also something you’ll most likely end up watching on Netflix one day. If you feel like you’re up to watching a thriller and you’ve exhausted every single one of Morgan Freeman’s movies from the 90’s then maybe wait until Greta hits a steaming service. In the meantime, maybe watch a David Fincher movie, doesn’t matter what one, they’re all good.
